THE
ZAMBEZI CLASSIC LONG
There
is then a half-hour pleasant walk down
into the Gorge. Canoeing begins after
a safety talk at approximately 11h00.
The Zambezi Classics are the safaris
for those in search of wilderness and
those seeking in-depth appreciation of
the Zambezi River and an expedition of
a lifetime. On the last night, clients
camp at Kanyemba. The transfer back is
approximately 8 hours. Clients are
expected back in Kariba at about
16h00.
Your briefing will be held at the
Kariba Breezes Hotel at 18h15 at the
lower pool terrace on the evening
before your trip departs. After the
briefing you will be asked to sign an
indemnity form. Canoeing Safaris will
collect you for the briefing and
return you to your hotel afterwards.
DAY ONE (18 km)
1. Canoeing Safaris will collect you
on the morning of your safari in time
for a check in at the Canoeing
Safaris’ office at 08h00 to hand in
extra luggage and valuables. Please do
not take your passport on the River
with you!
2. Your safari will depart from Kariba
Breezes at 08h30 for shopping to
purchase any extra drinks for your
trip. Your group will leave the shop
at 09h00 for the start of the canoe
safari.
3. After arriving at the Kariba Gorge,
your luggage is then carried into the
Gorge and your group will walk the 1.5
km down to the River. Here you will
meet all your canoeing and camping
equipment that has been carried into
the Gorge already.
4. A safety talk and demonstration on
how to paddle a canoe will be given to
your group.
5. At 11h00, paddling will begin until
a stop is made for lunch at 13h00.
6. Lunch is a picnic-style lunch with
time for a siesta afterwards to pass
the heat of the day until 14h30 /
15h00.
7. Your group then paddle until
approximately 17h00 when you set up
camp on an island in the middle of the
River named Crocodile Rocks. There is
time to have a bucket bath, relax and
have dinner after a brief safety talk
on camping.
DAY TWO (27 km)
1. Your group will be woken at sunrise
for tea, coffee and biscuits before
you start canoeing.
2. Between 08h00 and 09h30 a stop will
be made for breakfast.
3. Your group will resume canoeing
until a lunch stop is made at 13h00,
with time for a siesta.
4. Between 15h00 and 17h00 your group
will paddle to the next camping spot
at Twin Logs Island.
DAY THREE (28 km)
1. Your group will be woken at sunrise
for tea, coffee, biscuits and
breakfast before you start canoeing.
2. Paddling will start around 08h00.
Between 10h30 and 11h00 you will reach
the pick up point at Chriundu where
your equipment will be loaded and you
will receive fresh and clean equipment
for the second leg of your safari.
3. The group will resume paddling
after a light packed lunch to the
night stop at Kakomarara Island.
DAY FOUR (27 km)
Your programme is the same as day two
with the night stop being made at Lone
Acacia Island.
DAY FIVE (23 km)
Your programme is the same as day two
and four with the night stop being
made at Trichelia Island.
DAY SIX (27 km)
1. The group is woken up at sunrise
for tea, coffee, biscuits and
breakfast before paddling starts at
08h00.
2. The group arrives at Mana Pools at
10h00 where fresh supplies are
received. You will also have a light
packed lunch before canoeing resumes
between 12h30 and 13h30.
3. At about 16h30, the group will
arrive at the night stop, Chikwenya
Island.
DAY SEVEN (24 km)
1. The group wakes up at sunrise for
tea, coffee and biscuits before
paddling about an hour for the
breakfast spot.
2. After breakfast between 08h30 and
09h30, you paddle until 12h30 where a
lunch stop is made followed by a
siesta until about 15h00.
3. The group paddles to Chewore High
Sand Bank where the night stop is
made.
DAY EIGHT (30 km)
The programme is the same as day two
with the night stop being made in the
Mupata Gorge.
DAY NINE (28 km)
The programme is the same as day two
and three with the night stop being
made at the Redcliffs.
DAY TEN (15 km)
The group wakes up at sunrise for tea,
coffee and biscuits and breakfast
before paddling for approximately one
hour to Kanyemba, where the canoes and
kit are packed on to the vehicle,
followed by the trip back to Kariba
which is approximately eight hours by
road. Arrival time in Kariba is around
16h00.
PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS IS A CAMPING
SAFARI WHERE THERE ARE NO FIXED
ABLUTION FACILITIES ALONG THE WAY. ALL
TIMES GIVEN ARE APPROXIMATE AND WILL
VARY FROM TRIP TO TRIP.
General Information
Our safaris are self-participatory
which means that camps are not already
set up and that everyone helps set up
their tents each evening (very easy to
set up two-man dome tents).
We can take a minimum of 2 pax and a
maximum of 8 pax.
We have a minimum age limit of 15
years - there is no maximum age limit
but discretion must be used.
No previous canoeing experience is
necessary but we do require our guests
to be reasonably fit and healthy.
We have a luggage room and safe
facilities for any extra luggage - the
maximum luggage limit on the River is
10 kgs.
We prefer guests to be in Kariba the
day before and the day after their
safari.
There is a pre-trip briefing the night
before a safari at Kariba Breezes
Hotel lower pool terrace at 18h15.
Animals seen on the trip usually
include elephant, buffalo, impala,
waterbuck, hippo, crocodile and plenty
of birdlife. Lion and leopard are more
difficult to see but they are
certainly in the area. We do not
guarantee that plenty of game will be
seen on safari.
WHAT COSTS INCLUDE
1. Transfers to and from the airport
the day before and the day after the
safari, to and from respective hotel.
2. Transfers to and from the briefing
at Kariba Breezes Hotel the night
before and also transfers to Breezes
on the day of the safari.
3. Road transfers to and from the
safari - e.g. from Chirundu / to Mana
Pools.
4. All meals - three full meals per
day plus biscuits in between. We do
cater for dietary preferences, such as
vegetarian or diabetic - please could
guests let us know a bit in a advance
if they do have any preferences.
5. Drinks - cordials not minerals.
There is no alcohol, except for a
bottle of wine with dinner each
evening. If guests would like to take
their own alcohol or minerals we do
supply a cooler box which will carry
quite a few tins.
6. All canoeing equipment - the canoes
are two-man Canadian-style canoes, and
the paddles are American Carlisle
paddles.
7. All camping equipment - two-man
dome tents, sleeping bags, liners,
mattress, mosquito net, fly sheet,
ground sheet and tarpaulin (in case of
rainy weather).
8. A fully qualified canoe guide.
