Kariba to Tamarind
Camp (Zambia).
The Safari begins 75 metres below the
awesome Kariba Dam Wall on the Zambian
bank.
From here we travel through 18 km of
steep sided Basalt gorge, which
provides a secluded habitat for many
Bird, Mammal and Flora species.
The scenery is breathtaking and the
calls of the Fish Eagle and Rock Hyrax
add to the experience.
In the rainy months, there is the
opportunity to relax in the many fresh
water streams that pour over the sides
of the gorge and to explore these
hidden tributaries up into the banks
of the river along Elephant and Hippo
trails. The trip allows the client
plenty of time to drift, fish or
explore.
At the end of the 18km gorge the river
empties itself onto the Zambezi Flood
plain and fans out into channels and
shallows. Here the Safari’s Tamarind
Camp is nestled into the last hill of
the Gorge on the Zambian bank - this
is a spot that all should experience.
The camp enjoys a shady well-hidden
sighting beneath a grove of some of
the largest spreading Tamarind trees
one may find. The rather quaint tents
under thatch make for comfortable and
Mozzie-free sleeping.
The food is good and it’s only a
short hour’s drive back into Kariba
the following day
