KAINGO
CAMP: Accommodation
consists of four twin bedded
chalets and one honeymoon
suite, with outside bath.
All chalets have en-suite
facilities, are well
ventilated, mosquito-proofed
and silently lit by solar
power. These brick and thatch
chalets are set discretely
apart, each with a view of the
Luangwa River. There is
a large centrally located
open-sided sitting room with
dining area and Kaingo's
renowned lead wood bar.
A wooden deck is also built
out over the river for
relaxing and game viewing.
MWAMBA
BUSH CAMP: Set on the
banks of the Mwamba River, a
tributary of the Luangwa, the
camp enjoys shady views of
perennial water holes.
The chalets are uniquely
designed with two large
skylights (protected by
mosquito gauze) allowing you
to experience sleeping safely
'under the stars' and have
en-suite facilities. The
three reed and thatch
bungalows also have solar
lighting, flush toilets and
hot showers. The
accommodation reflects a
thoughtful balance between
back-to-nature simplicity and
essential comforts. The
dining area is set under the
deep shade of huge ebony
trees.
ACTIVITIES:
At sunrise we set out on
morning game-drives or walking
safaris. Drives give
un-paralleled close-up
encounters with Luangwa's big
game and introduce the beauty
of the river and lagoon
systems. Walking
safaris, conducted by fully
qualified guide and armed
scout, explore the majestic
ebony forests, the open plains
and the meandering river.
All aspects of the bush are
entertainingly explained.
At noon we offer the
additional trips to our two
hides for close-up viewing of
hippos, elephants and other
game which are drawn to the
river to drink. In the
afternoon there is a game
drive, followed by a sundowner
drink in a picturesque spot
and a night drive to see
nocturnal wildlife. At
Mwamba we concentrate more on
exploring the bush by foot
safaris. Therefore as
well as the morning walks
there is an option of an
additional afternoon walk,
usually followed by sundowner
at the camp and a night drive.
KAINGO/MWAMBA
COMBINATION: By
experiencing Kaingo Camp and
transferring to Mwamba Bush
Camp, one can enjoy the unique
environs and character of both
camps, while maintaining
quality service and continuity
of staff. The journey
between the two camps is a
relaxed three-hour walking
safari, up the Mwamba River,
filled with an abundance of
game. Luggage is
transferred by vehicle and for
those guests who prefer to
drive the trip takes only 20
minutes.
PHOTOGRAPHIC:
A special feature of Kaingo
Camp is its unique
hides/blinds. The
elephant and hippo hides offer
spectacular close photographic
opportunities and unobtrusive
observation of animals in
their natural environment. The
surrounding area also lends
itself to spectacular
landscape photography, from
vast open plains to shaded
forests.
BIRDING:
Both camps offer excellent
birding opportunities.
The area has two beautiful
lagoons that attract large
fishing parties of
yellow-billed storks,
pelicans, and marabous.
In late Aug/Sept there are
also a number of nesting sites
of the carmine bee-eaters in
the area. Our bird list
includes Pel's fishing owls,
bat hawks, pennant-winged
nightjars, Western-banded
snake-eagle, moustached
warbler and many others.
GAME
VIEWING: A significant
advantage Shenton Safaris has
over most other operations is
that its camps are located in
one of the most game-intensive
areas in SLNP. By being
situated opposite the Nsefu
Sector of SLNP, it
allows visitors to experience
this ancient valley without
interference from human
settlement. As the park
lies on both sides of the
Luangwa river ,wildlife is
able to follow its natural
migrations undisturbed by
fishing or hunting from
humans. Because of the
location of these two camps
there are some regular
sighting of mammal that may
not be seen in other areas,
like the Cookson's wildebeest,
eland and serval.
